Computer: How to Find the Name
Find your computer name on Mac, Windows, and Linux
The following article shares information on how to find the computer name for various operating systems including macOS, Windows 11, Windows 10, and Linux. Scroll down to find your devices operating system.
Finding computer name on macOS Sonoma and Sequoia
- Click the Apple
menu, located on the upper-left hand corner of the screen.
- Select System Settings.
- Click General
in the sidebar.
- Click About on the right (you may need to scroll down to see it).

Name should be listed in the About window.
Finding computer name on Windows 11
Windows Note: If you use Windows, you can hold down the Windows key and the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to quickly view your computer name, regardless of your device's operating system.
- Click on the Start menu

- Click on Settings

- Click the About category at the bottom of the Settings window.
- The computer name is the Device name that is listed below the heading Device Specifications.
Finding computer name on Windows 10
Windows Note: If you use Windows, you can hold down the Windows key and the Pause/Break key on your keyboard to quickly view your computer name, regardless of your device's operating system.
- Click on the Start menu
>> then use one of the two options below (search box or Settings menu):
- Use the search box:
- Type computer name in the Type here to search box in the lower left.
- Select View your PC name in the results.
- Use the Settings window:
- Click on Settings
.
- Click the System category in the Window Settings window.
- Click About in the menu on the left (you may need to scroll down to find the About menu).
- The computer name is the Device name that is listed below the heading Device Specifications.
Finding computer name on Linux
- Open a terminal.
- To open a terminal in Ubuntu, select Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal.
- Type hostname at the command line.
- This will print your computer name on the next line.
