CrashPlan: Signing in to Start Computer Backup
Why sign into CrashPlan?
CrashPlan is backup software used to backup user profiles on Swarthmore College-owned computers. It is not licensed for use on personal computers.
CrashPlan protects and restores user data in the event of a computer crash, hardware failure, or lost / deleted file(s). It is also used to restore user account data during the computer replacement process.
Apple computers:
During computer setup, CrashPlan should automatically log in the primary user as part of the standard faculty / staff computer setup process (following the Mac setup instructions provided by ITS).
Apple computers that were signed into with a non-swarthmore user account (does not match a current Swarthmore username and password), or were not configured through Jamf, may not have CrashPlan installed - or may require manual configuration. For manual configuration, follow the instructions below.
Dell computers:
CrashPlan requires manual configuration during the faculty / staff computer setup process. Follow the instructions below.
Setting up Code42

Look for CrashPlan in the list of programs under the Start menu or via the Search box (Dell / Windows). On Apple / Mac computers, look in Applications or search via Finder (magnifying glass in top right, near date & time).
NOTE: If CrashPlan is not on the computer, go to CrashPlan Installation.
- Launch / Open CrashPlan.
- Click Start Backup
- Enter your full Swarthmore email address for Username.
- Enter clients.us2.crashplan.com for the Server Address.
- You will be redirected to the Swarthmore Single Sign-on (SSO) portal, to sign into your Swarthmore account and verify your identity via Duo.
- Next, click Start New Backup.
- CrashPlan will start backing up files via Internet2.
