Eduroam Wireless Troubleshooting FAQ for Swarthmore Connections
Follow steps/tips below to troubleshoot Eduroam connection issues:
Restart your device
Devices can hang onto network connections and not release old info. Restarting the device also releases resources tied up in the background.
Forget the eduroam network and try again
The saved eduroam connection may be holding onto old settings, like an old password, old policy key, old certificate, etc.
Uninstall the policy key before reconnecting. To uninstall the policy key, look for the following programs (listed below by associate operating system:
-
Apple macOS - SafeConnect. Make sure to use the Uninstall SafeConnect app to uninstall the policy key from your Apple device.
-
Windows - OPSWAT Policy Key. This is located under Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
Check that you are using your full Swarthmore email address to login
- Username: Full Swarthmore email address (ex. auser1@swarthmore.edu)
- Password: Swarthmore password
Check anti-virus
Computers are required to have anti-virus is installed, running, fully functional, and up-to-date in order to use the eduroam connection.
Apple devices need a third-party anti-virus program installed and enabled. Make sure the anti-virus program has "Full Disk Access". Follow all prompts during the install process - there will be multiple prompts to Open System Settings during the install process. Anti-virus should be installed, running, and up-to-date.
NOTE: Windows 11 includes anti-virus. Make sure that the built-in Windows Security is enabled and up-to-date.
Check that you have the policy key installed
If connecting for the first time to Eduroam on the device, go to sfip.swarthmore.edu to download and install the policy key. If that doesn't work, try entering in the website address with the port number: https://sfip.swarthmore.edu:9443/
The policy key is called SafeConnect on Apple computers and OPSWAT on Windows computers.
- On Apple computers, SafeConnect is located in the Applications folder
- On Windows computers, the OPSWAT Policy Key is located under Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.
Check for "Random MAC Address" setting
If it is enabled, disable it for the network Eduroam. Eduroam is a WPA2-Enterprise connection, which uses a unique username and password (highly secure). It can be also be called "Private Wifi Address"
Check for "Private DNS" setting
Some Apps turn on Private DNS by default. You will not be able to reach Swarthmore websites if a Private DNS has been added to your network settings.
If using a private DNS source, disable/remove it. Device must be able to use the Swarthmore DNS servers to load all web pages.
Check DNS IP addresses
If they are different than the two listed below, remove them:,/p>
- 130.58.64.18
- 130.58.64.19
Sometimes Google DNS servers take over, and need to be removed (7.7.7.7 or 8.8.8.8)
Check if SwatGuest connect is saved
If you have tried to connect to SwatGuest, the saved connection will kick your device off of eduroam. SwatGuest has less security and will enthusiastically try to connect to the network anywhere on campus. Delete saved SwatGuest connections so that they do not interfere with your eduroam connection.
Windows Users using Windows S-Mode
Windows S-mode only allows apps from the Windows App store
If you are using Windows S-mode, you will need to Disable S-mode to install the policy key.
