Computer: How to Set Up My New Apple Computer
Mac First Time Setup by Client
IMPORTANT: Read all of the instructions so that you know what to expect during the process. If the steps below are not followed, the computer will not setup properly.
If you purchased this computer and did not get it from ITS, skip Getting Started and Configure User account. Follow Manually Enroll My Computer.
Getting Started
Plug in the computer

Connect it to the network - network connection and power supply are required for the setup to complete.
On campus - use an ethernet adapter to plug in an ethernet cable.
Off campus - connect to your home network when prompted.
If you have an iMac, use the ethernet port

Turn on your computer
Choose Language (English) and then Country/Region (United States).
For Accessibility options, choose Not now.
At Swarthmore College Remote Management, click Continue and wait while it launches configuration scripts.

Enable Location Services.
Login to the Setup account with the password "setup".
Wait while the Setup account configures
Wait for the Setup account to load the desktop
Configure User Account

Open the Self Service app to create your user account

Select "Setup as individual Computer"

Use your Swarthmore username and password when creating the account.
- There is only one prompt to enter in your password, so take your time to ensure that it is entered correctly.

After the Setup Wizard finishes, you will be prompted to reboot your laptop > click OK.

Login to the account you just created.
- There may be additional user accounts listed. That is normal, and they will go away after set up has been completed.
- Skip down to section titled "Install Swarthmore Programs"
Manually Enroll My Computer
NOTE: Computers that are not purchased directly through ITS may not have the automatic enrollment software. If you did not get the Remote Management prompts, follow these steps to enroll your computer before Installing Swarthmore Programs.
- Navigate to swarthmore.jamfcloud.com/enroll
- Type in enroll for username
- Type in enroll for password
- Click continue on the user page without entering in any information
- Click Continue again
- A certificate will be downloaded

Double-click the certificate to install it

You may be prompted to allow the certificate. Follow the prompt to install the certificate
- If you miss the prompt, Go to System Settings
- Click on Privacy and Security
- Scroll down to Security
- Allow or approve the certificate
- Return to webpage and click Continue again
- Another certificate will be downloaded
- Double-click the certificate to install it
Install Swarthmore Programs
NOTE: The next few steps may occur in a different order - you can start Adobe sign-in, printer install, etc while waiting for Crashplan and Filevault Encryption.
- Launch Terminal
- Navigate to Go > Utilities > Terminal
- Type the command sudo jamf policy and press Enter
- Enter the account password when prompted (you will not see anything as you type, which is normal) and press Enter.
- Swarthmore-related software will begin installing (including Canon printer drivers, Google Chrome, Firefox, Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop app, Acrobat Pro, Cisco AnyConnect VPN, Microsoft Office, CrashPlan, Zoom).
- Software installation takes around 20 mins.
- The applications will appear in the Applications folder after they are installed.
- Wait until the script finishes running.
- Terminal will ask for permission to access various folders
- Click OK to allow access to the different folders.
Configure Crashplan
Wait for the Crashplan icon to load in the menu bar (top right, to the left of the network icon). If it does not appear after 20 minutes and a computer restart, download CrashPlan

- Launch / Open CrashPlan.
- Click Start Backup
- Enter your full Swarthmore email address for Username.
- For the Server Address enter clients.us2.crashplan.com
- You will be redirected to the Swarthmore Single Sign-on (SSO) portal in your browser, to sign into your Swarthmore account and verify your identity via Duo.
- Go back to the CrashPlan application window
- Click Setup New Device.
- Your computer should now start backing up
- Enable Filevault encryption when prompted -- during the setup process, you will be prompted to restart the computer to enable Filevault encryption.

NOTE: If you have an iMac, Filevault encryption will not take place.
Complete Setup
- "Your computer is scheduled to be rebooted" > wait for it to reboot.
- Accept the Swarthmore Acceptable Use Policy > Log back into your account.
- "Your Administrator requires that you enable Filevault." > click Enable Now.
- "Enabling Filevault on your system" > click OK.
Sign into Swarthmore Programs
NOTE: Instructions for installing printers and other ITS-related resources, can be found on the ITS Service Portal (https://support.swarthmore.edu). Login to the ITS Service Portal for full access to its resources (an image of the portal is shown below).

Printer Install: Go to the ITS Service Portal > search "printing" > select "Printing for Faculty and Staff".
This will open a new webpage > search for the printer that you'd like to install.
Do NOT download and install the Canon drivers - they are already installed on your computer.
The printers are listed by department abbreviation-building and room (ex. its-beardsley110). If not able to find your department, try searching by building.
Adobe Creative Cloud: Login with your full Swarthmore email address > then enter your Swarthmore credentials at the Swarthmore login page > select Work account.
Launch Microsoft Office. Continue without signing into Office. A license file is already installed on your Mac.

Zoom Sign in with SSO
VPN Setup: Go to the ITS Service Portal > search "vpn" > select "VPN Setup on macOS and Windows".
