Claim Your Swarthmore Account
NOTE: Spring of 2025 Swarthmore migrated to a new Password Portal, which changed the account setup process. The instructions below explain the process for setting up your account.
Download DUO Mobile App
Duo 2-factor authentication is part of logging into Swarthmore resources. You will set up your DUO Mobile app during account setup. To get prepared, install the app before using the link to Claim Your Account.
Download the DUO Mobile app from your phone's App Store.

Android - download from Google Play Store. If you are not able to install apps from the Play Store, follow the instructions to download the DUO APK client from the Duo site.

Claim Identity Account
Claiming your identity is a five step process. The five steps are listed below.
Locate Your Account
- Go to https://password.swarthmore.edu
- Click Claim Identity Account
- Enter Swarthmore Username and Student/Employee ID number.
Read and accept the Acceptable Use Policy
- Read the linked Swarthmore College Acceptable Use Policy
- Check the box to agree to the terms
Setup Recovery Methods
- Enter a personal email address and phone number
- Enter a US phone number - international phone numbers will not work. If you do not have a US phone number, you will be able to skip the recovery phone number option. You can add the recovery phone number after you get an US number.
- Enter the verification code that is sent to your recovery options. A separate one is sent to each recovery option.
Register DUO Device
- Enter mobile device details for DUO Registration

Device Type - Mobile Phone or Tablet (these are the only two options that allow the DUO Mobile app)

Device Name - Name your device such as iPhone, iPad, Samsung, Google Pixel, etc

Platform Type - iOS, Android, or Generic

Phone Number - Enter your mobile phone number. Both US and International phone numbers work for DUO device registration.
- Activate the DUO device

Activate using Duo Mobile and scan the QR code, or send an activation link
- Open the activation link on the device that has the DUO Mobile app installed
Set Your Swarthmore Password
- Setup your Swarthmore account password
- Set a password that meets the listed requirements. Requirements will be listed on the password reset screen.
- Select a strong password that is 15-characters or more to be password expiry exempt
- Once the system accepts your password a confirmation screen will pop-up confirming you have completed the process to claim your account
- You will be redirected to the Swarthmore ITS Support Portal
