Upgrading to Windows 11
NOTE: Windows 10 reached End of Life (EOL) on October 14, 2025, and is no longer receiving security or other updates. Over the summer, ITS pushed out Windows 11 to college computers. If your computer did not receive the upgrade, follow the steps below.
Check for Windows Updates
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update
- Click the dropdown arrow next to the Check for updates button
- Select Check online for updates from Microsoft Update, even if it says "you're up to date"
-
Repeat the process until it shows the Windows 11 upgrade option
Install Pending Updates
NOTE: If there are updates available for the current version of Windows, the Windows 11 upgrade might not be made available until those updates are installed. Install any updates for the current version of Windows, restart the device, and then try checking for the Windows 11 upgrade again.
If you do not see the option to Check for updates, there may be pending updates that need to be installed. Follow the prompts to install the updates. Restart your computer when prompted, and then go back to Windows Update and check for more updates.
Repeat the process until the computer actively looks for updates, but does not find any.
Windows Update displays "You're up to date"
Check online for updates from Microsoft Update
- Follow the steps above under the Check for Windows Updates section to have the computer look for more updates.
- Repeat the process until the computer actively looks for updates and you are able to download and install Windows 11.
Check if Computer Meeets Hardware Requirements
If Windows 11 isn't displayed in the Windows Update window after repeatedly checking for updates, use the PC Health Check app to check hardware compatibility. For more information, go to How to use the PC Health Check app.
